Everyone on the planet is making jewelry right now, right?  So that makes it even more exciting when you find something unique.  I think that these pieces by Nikki Couppee are cool and different and GORGEOUS!
'My current work talks about the different functions jewelry performs in society. Objects of personal adornment have the ability to define a person’s social status, question value and serve as a redeemable investment. Often given to mark a special occasion or milestone, jewelry can also perform on a psychological level with the transference of deep feelings onto the object. I am seeking to create opulent jewelry that is reminiscent of royal jewelry but made out of quotidian materials instead of precious gems and metals. With the use of everyday materials, I am able to create jewelry that surpasses in size and extravagance the scope of the royal jewels I admire, almost to the point of absurdity. Stainless steel, mild steel, Plexiglas, wood, brass and polymer clay are used as substitutes for diamonds, crystal, coral, gold and seed pearls. I insert an element of decay by allowing the mild steel to rust naturally against the stainless, thus adding a layer of impermanence which challenges the market value of the work and forces one to reflect on its potential changes over time.'
Amazing right?
